Victoria named world’s best small city for the third straight year

For the third year in a row, Victoria has officially been named the number one small citt in the World by Condé Nast Traveler readers, beating out impressive places like Florence, Lucerne, and Puerto Vallarta.

The results are part of Condé Nast Traveler’s 38th annual Readers’ Choice Awards. They come from over 750,000 votes cast by travelers around the world who shared their favorite destinations, hotels, islands, and experiences from the past year.

“Being recognized as the world’s best small city for a third consecutive year is both an honour and a testament to Greater Victoria’s incredible community,” said Paul Nursey, CEO of Destination Greater Victoria.

“This achievement reflects the quality and dedication of our members and their teams, whose passion for service and hospitality sets Greater Victoria apart on the global stage.”

In its article, Condé Nast Traveler highlighted Victoria as a destination that deserves a visit on its own, not just a short trip from Vancouver.

“A popular day trip from Vancouver, British Columbia’s capital city deserves a standalone visit,” the editors wrote. “Arrive via one of the world’s most scenic ferry rides across Swartz Bay and check in to the bucket list-worthy Fairmont Empress.”

The magazine also highlighted Victoria’s reputation as the “most British town in Canada,” noting its many charming tea rooms, including Venus Sophia, a local favourite for baked goods and high tea.

And for those craving nature, the editors recommended escaping into the lush rainforests and wild coastlines of Vancouver Island.

Beyond its beautiful scenery and historic charm, Condé Nast Traveler readers also note Victoria’s commitment to sustainability.

The city was the first urban destination in Canada or the US to earn Biosphere Certification, and it has been recertified each year since 2023. It also ranks among North America’s most sustainable destinations on the Global Destination Sustainability Index.

“Victoria is a city unlike any other,” said Nursey. “Our commitment is to deliver authentic, memorable experiences and to keep raising the bar for responsible, welcoming tourism.”

Whether it’s sipping cocktails by the harbor, exploring boutique shops in Old Town, or enjoying a locally sourced meal just steps from the ocean, it’s clear why travelers keep choosing Victoria as their favorite small city.

You can find the complete list of Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Award winners on their website. It will also be highlighted in the magazine’s November issue.
