The City of Victoria has announced that a plan has been developed to continue providing pool access to those who use Crystal Pool during its construction.
According to the City, a plan is being finalized to use the building at Quadra and Broughton Streets, which are currently used by the YMCA/YWCA.
With the YMCA/YWCA moving to their new location in the Bay Centre in early 2026, the current location will be available for City use.
“We are thrilled to share this news,” says Mayor Marianne Alto.
“We asked staff to leave no stone unturned in finding solutions that lessen the impact of the Crystal Pool closure. The result of that work, in collaboration with community partners, is a big win for Victoria’s pool users.”
The City says work must be done on some key upgrades to get the soon-to-be former YMCA/YWCA location at 851 Broughton Street ready, and keep it running for the planned five-year construction period.
The City hopes to have upgrades complete by fall 2026, when the Crystal Pool and Fitness Centre will close permanently and the interim facility will open for use.
This interim facility will feature a pool, as well as space for a variety of fitness and recreation programs.
The City says that over the next several months, they will be working to develop a range of services and activities that will be available at this site.
“We know how important pool access is to the community,” says Derrick Newman, Director of Parks and Recreation.
“Our collaboration with Concert Properties and the YMCA/YWCA of Vancouver Island has enabled us to move forward with a creative solution that supports our residents while the new pool is being built.”
