In late September, a VicPD officer was pulled from the event he had been stationed at to aid in delivering a baby in downtown Victoria.
Constable Mandeep Sohi was reportedly working a local event nearby, when he was called to the scene of a medical emergency along Wharf Street.
According to police, a passerby had alerted on-site personnel, and said that a woman was in labour and needed immediate assistance.
Sohi then responded to the call and located the woman in active labour.
Police say he provided support, working alongside members of St. John Ambulance who were on site to ensure the safety of both mother and baby.
Though St. John Ambulance volunteers were on the scene, the newborn was delivered before paramedics could arrive.
“It was a truly remarkable scene,” said Sohi.
“One minute you’re ensuring public safety at an event, and the next you’re assisting in bringing a new life into the world. These are the moments that remind us why we do this job; it’s incredibly humbling and rewarding.”
Police say they are respecting the family’s privacy and will not be releasing further details on this event.
