Earlier this month Saanich Police issued a ticket to a motorcyclist for lane splitting and are now reminding motorists that this action is illegal.
On Tuesday, September 2nd, police received a report of a motorcycle dangerously weaving through traffic, and at one point lane splitting as it travelled eastbound on McKenzie Avenue near Saanich Road.
Lane splitting, which is also sometimes referred to as ‘white-lining, ‘filtering’ or ‘lane sharing.’ This is when a motorcycle rider drives between lanes of stopped or slow-moving traffic.
Saanich Police say that the rider’s actions were caught on a dashcam, and the footage was provided to officers.
Officers were able to identify the motorcycle’s owner using the footage, and the individual admitted to being the rider that day. He was then issued a $196 ticket for driving without consideration.
Police say that lane splitting is dangerous and illegal in BC. This practice puts motorcycle riders and other road users at serious risk of injury.
They added that motorcyclists are expected to follow the same rules as all other vehicles that use the road.
