The District of Saanich has donated numerous computers and equipment to the W̱SÁNEĆ ȽÁU,WELṈEW̱ Elementary School, just in time for the new school year.
The W̱SÁNEĆ ȽÁU,WELṈEW̱ Elementary School is located within First Nations territory, just north of Brentwood Bay. There, the school teaches W̱SÁNEĆ Nations children from preschool to Grade 6, with a focus on the traditional teachings of their Peoples.
All in all, the District donated 48 desktop computers, as well as 60 mice and keyboards to the school to help bolster their learning resources.
According to the District, this donation came about after hearing of some issues with school resources at a recent ceremony held in collaboration with the W̱SÁNEĆ Leadership Council.
“Nothing is more important than a good education, so it’s important that as a District we take every opportunity to support students in their pursuit of knowledge,” said Saanich Chief Information Officer Trevor Hurst.
“We were inspired to take action after learning about the profound impacts of our shared history, as we joined the W̱SÁNEĆ Leadership Council in a recent naming ceremony and celebration at PKOLS.”
W̱SÁNEĆ School Board Chair, Chief Don Tom says this ceremony was incredibly important to the Nations, as it has helped connect them to the district and garnered this donation.
“Today is the first of many to reconcile our histories. This will serve our students and the modern demand for technology in education,” said Chief Don Tom.
With the school year starting today, Tuesday, September 2nd, these computers and equipment will surely go to good use in helping the students and faculty members of the W̱SÁNEĆ ȽÁU,WELṈEW̱ Elementary School.
