Over 100 Canadians sick in Salmonella outbreak tied to pistachios and related products

More than 100 people across the country have become ill in a salmonella outbreak linked to pistachios and foods made with them, according to the Public Health Agency of Canada.

As of this week, health officials have confirmed 105 cases of infection in six provinces. Quebec has reported the highest number of cases with 66, followed by Ontario with 27.

In BC, six people have fallen ill.

The outbreak has also affected residents in Alberta, Manitoba, and New Brunswick. 16 people have been hospitalized, but no deaths have been reported.

Investigators say the illnesses are connected to various recalled pistachios and foods containing pistachios, including chocolates and pastries sold under several brand names.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has issued recall notices for the affected products, which were distributed in several provinces and, in some cases, sold online.

Symptoms of Salmonella include fever, chills, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach cramps, and headache. While most people recover in less than a week, the infection can be serious, especially for children, older adults, pregnant individuals, and those with weakened immune systems.

Health officials urge Canadians to check their homes for recalled pistachios or foods containing pistachios and either throw them away or return them to the place of purchase.

A complete list of recalled items is available on the CFIA’s Recalls and Safety Alerts website.

In BC and across the country, anyone experiencing symptoms after eating pistachio products should contact their healthcare provider.
