Island Health issues overdose advisory for Greater Victoria

Island Health has issued a drug poisoning and overdose advisory for Greater Victoria due to a rise in overdoses linked to unregulated substances.

The warning was released Wednesday evening and will be in effect for seven days, with plans to reassess the situation afterward.

The health authority states that people in the region face a greater risk of harm and urges community members to take precautions.

This warning for Greater Victoria comes just days after Island Health released a similar advisory for the Greater Campbell River area on September 18th, showing the widespread issue of the toxic drug supply across Vancouver Island.

Island Health recommend that anyone using substances carry naloxone, avoid mixing drugs, and start with a small amount before taking more.

They emphasize that individuals should not use drugs alone and, if unavoidable, should inform someone beforehand. They can also use digital support like the Lifeguard or Brave app or call the National Overdose Response Service at 1-888-688-6677.

Overdose prevention services are available in Victoria, which include supervised consumption and drug-checking sites to help reduce risks.

Drug-checking is available at Substance on Cook Street, while supervised services are offered daily at locations on Pandora Avenue, Ellice Street, and Johnson Street.

If an overdose occurs, bystanders should call 911, stay with the person, provide one breath every five seconds if they are not breathing, and administer naloxone if it is available.

Island Health encourages residents to sign up for local overdose text alerts by texting “JOIN” to 253787 or to report an overdose event by texting “OD.”
