According to DriveBC, Highway 1 is closed in both directions Friday morning near the Malahat summit due to a telephone line falling across the highway and blocking traffic.

DriveBC issued an alert just before 8:15 a.m. It noted that the closure extended about seven kilometres between Whittaker Road and Mill Bay Road.

“Highway closed due to downed telephone line. Detour via Shawnigan Lake Road to Shawnigan/Mill Bay Road,” the agency reported in its early update.

Highway cameras later showed the wire lying across all lanes of traffic shortly before 8:30 a.m., though no details were released on how long the closure would last.

More to come.
