Organized by the local organization Right to Learn Afghanistan, residents of Victoria are invited to the 6th annual Red Pashmina Walk on Sunday, September 7th in support of Afghan women and girls.
The walk will begin at Irving Park at 11 a.m. with remarks from Right to Learn Afghanistan’s Executive Director, Dr. Lauryn Oates, followed by the walk.
The Red Pashmina Walk was launched in Ontario in 2011, and has since grown into a nationwide symbol of solidarity for women and girls’ right to education.
Participants wear red pashmina scarves as they make their way through city streets, raising awareness and funds for the women and girls who are currently denied access to education under a system of gender apartheid.
“Denying women and girls an education is an egregious violation of their human rights,” says Lauryn Oates, Right to Learn Afghanistan’s Executive Director.
“No country can expect to succeed in any meaningful way when half of its population cannot be educated and is barred from participating in society.” she adds. “Education — particularly the education of women and girls — is the key factor in creating profound and lasting benefits for present and future generations.”
The funds that are raised during this event will go directly to Right to Learn Afghanistan initiatives, including scholarships, laptops, internet access, free online courses, library resources and an online high school program offering internationally recognized diplomas.
The event is free to attend, and if you wish to learn more, you can visit the Right to Learn website.
