A portion of Island Highway in View Royal has been shut down Wedneday afternoon as West Shore RCMP respond to an ongoing police incident.

Police were called to the 300 block of Island Highway around 1:20 p.m. on August 6th, prompting a heavy police presence and road closures in the area.

“Police are responding to an incident near the 300 block of Island Hwy,” West Shore RCMP said in a statement. “Expect a heavy police presence and potential road closures in the area. We advise all motorists and pedestrians to please avoid that area.”

Several Victoria Buzz readers reported that the nearby Salvation Army Thrift Store had been evacuated. Photos from the scene show police tape blocking access to the area.

In a follow up media release, West Shore RCMP confirmed they are responding to a suspicious item. The area has been contained and the RCMP Explosives Device Unit is en route.

Island Highway is closed in both directions between Helmcken and Jedburgh roads. Police are asking the public to avoid the area until it’s deemed safe.

West Shore RCMP say an update will be provided once the scene is cleared. Drivers are being asked to use alternate routes, as traffic in the area remains heavily impacted.
