North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP arrested two suspects last Wednesday morning after a stolen truck and trailer were tracked down on a rural logging road.
Just after 5:50 a.m. on August 20th, police received a report of a stolen vehicle travelling northbound on Osborne Bay Road in Crofton.
The vehicle’s owner spotted it and followed until officers were able to intercept. RCMP located the truck on a logging road in the North Cowichan/Ladysmith area and deployed a tire deflation device to stop it.
The suspects abandoned the vehicle and ran into the surrounding woods.
Air services and Police Dog Services from Nanaimo and Westshore detachments were called in to assist with the search through steep terrain and dense vegetation.
Both men, described as being in their 40s, were tracked and arrested by police dogs. One suspect sustained minor injuries during the arrest.
“Thanks to the attentiveness of a member of the public and the quick, coordinated response of our officers, including Air services, the Police Dog Service, and general duty members, we were able to locate the stolen vehicle and arrest two suspects,” said Sgt. Ryan Pullin, North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP.
“The outcome highlights the effectiveness of community awareness and the value of specialized RCMP resources working together.”
The stolen truck and cargo trailer were recovered, and forensic identification officers examined the vehicle and trailer. The two suspects remain in custody at the North Cowichan/Duncan detachment as the investigation continues.
