Police are investigating after a two-car collision on the Trans Canada Highway (Highway 1) near Malahat summit killed one and left five others injured.

The collision took place just before 4 p.m. on Thursday, August 14th.

Shawnigan Lake RCMP responded to the area of Highway 1 near Whittaker Road where it was determined that a white Toyota Corolla was travelling southbound when it collided with a black Dodge Ram near the intersection.

Police say the driver and passenger of the Dodge Ram suffered minor injuries and were transported to hospital.

However, the four occupants of the Toyota suffered varying degrees of injuries with one of those passengers succumbing to their injuries.

BC Emergency Health Services (BCEHS) says that a total of five ambulances were called to the scene, where paramedics treated all six individuals, all of whom were taken to hospital.

Prior to one of the passengers passing, BCEHS reported that two patients were in critical condition and four were in stable condition.

Police had to partially close down Highway 1 for around four hours as an RCMP Collision Analyst and BC Coroners Service investigator attended the scene to conduct an investigation.

At this time, it has not been determined what caused this fatal collision.

Witnesses told Victoria Buzz that several motorists stopped to help, directing traffic, assisting people out of their vehicles, and comforting the injured until emergency crews arrived.

Police say this file remains under investigation, and no further details can be revealed at this time.

Anyone with information about the collision should contact Shawnigan Lake RCMP at (250) 743-5514.
