A cyclist who was critically injured after being struck by a truck in Saanich last week has died, according to the BC Coroners Service.
Emergency crews were called to the intersection of Quadra Street and Greenridge Crescent, near the Lochside Trail crossing, at around 11:45 a.m. on July 28th.
A pickup truck had collided with a cyclist at the busy crossing point.
Paramedics and Saanich Fire provided immediate medical care, and the cyclist was rushed to hospital in critical condition.
The driver of the pickup remained at the scene, and the vehicle was seized for forensic examination.
On Tuesday, August 5th, the BC Coroners Service confirmed to Victoria Buzz the cyclist has since passed away. The identity of the victim has not been released.
Given the seriousness of the incident, the department’s Major Crime Unit took the lead on the case.
“The Major Crime Unit has assumed conduct of this investigation due to the serious nature of the incident and the potential for long-term consequences for those involved. This unit brings specialized expertise in complex investigations, including those involving serious injury,” said Saanich Police in a statement to Victoria Buzz last week.
They added that the unit ensures “a comprehensive and impartial investigation” using specialized resources and high investigative standards—especially important in cases with potential legal, procedural, or public interest implications.
Investigators continue to examine the circumstances that led to the collision, and anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has dashcam footage is urged to contact Saanich Police.
