Community to gather in memory of mother and infant lost at Comox Lake

The family of the young mother and infant who died after a tree fell on them at Comox Lake has issued a heartfelt public statement, thanking first responders and community members who rushed to help in the moments following the tragedy.

The statement, shared through the Comox Valley RCMP, expresses the family’s deep sorrow following the loss of 26-year-old Lynae and baby Elias, who died on July 31st.

“We are heartbroken by the tragedy that took place at Comox Lake,” the statement reads. “Thank you to the police, paramedics, and people on the beach who tried to save our beautiful babies who we know are safe in the arms of Jesus. We are so grateful.”

The family is inviting the public to a community gathering at Comox Marina Park on Sunday, August 10th at 6 p.m., where they plan to honour the lives of Lynae and Elias and thank the community for its support.

“At Comox Marina Park, we will share in the love that Lynae and Elias brought to this earth,” they wrote.

Those wishing to make a donation in their memory are encouraged to support the Nesting Place Society, a non-profit organization that provides services and housing for pregnant and parenting women in the Comox Valley.

The fatal incident occurred just before 1:45 p.m. on July 31st, when a tree fell on the mother and infant while they were at the beach.

Bystanders immediately began CPR before emergency crews arrived. The mother was pronounced dead at the scene, and the child later died in hospital.

The Comox Valley RCMP say there is no indication of criminality. The investigation is now in the hands of the BC Coroners Service.

Police and local officials have offered their condolences to the family, and to those who witnessed the traumatic event.

No further details are expected to be released.
