On Monday, July 14th, a wildfire was discovered within the Sea To Sea Regional Park, near Grass Lake.
This blaze is just around four kilometres from the popular summertime destination of Sooke Potholes Park.
Since it was discovered, the BC Wildfire Service has been working to get the fire under control and have succeeded thus far, as the wildfire was updated to ‘being held,’ on Wednesday, July 16th.
This means that it is not expected to grow beyond its current perimeter, based on its fuel, the weather conditions and the resource availability of the BC Wildfire Service.
The Grass Lake wildfire is around 1.2 hectares in size and is suspected to have been caused by human activity.
Currently, there are 16 personnel and one helicopter responding to this blaze.
In addition to this wildfire, there are four others on Vancouver Island, all of which have been deemed to be ‘under control’ by the BC Wildfire Service.
One on the slopes of Nahmint Mountain, near Port Alberni; one just outside Duncan on the Cowichan First Nation Reserve; one just off Highway 14, between Jordan River and Sombrio Beach; and one just off Pacific Marine Road, northeast of Port Renfrew.
As of this publication, there are 67 active wildfires throughout BC.
