Canadian Blood Services has put out a call to Victorians with type O-negative blood to donate as soon as they can.
The main reason this type of blood is so sought after is because O-negative blood is compatible with all blood types meaning it can be given to any patient. O-negative donors are sometimes called universal donors.
“When seconds count, and there is no time to check blood types, hospital patients receive O-negative blood – the universal blood type,” said Canadian Blood Services in a media release.
“Only 7 per cent of people in Canada have O-negative blood. This is a small percentage with a huge impact. That’s why it is so important that people with O-negative blood donate regularly, if they can.”
Because supplies are always dwindling, Canadian Blood Services are calling on all Victorians who know their blood is O-negative, to book an appointment or go to a donor centre as soon as possible.
They added that for O-negative blood types, it is likely that someone in their family also has O-negative blood, so they can double their impact by inviting family members with the same blood type to join.
“Hospitals have the blood they need today, but that could change if appointments aren’t filled,” said Canadian Blood Services.
“Demand is high for O-negative blood this summer, so O-negative donations are needed right away to keep the supply strong.”
Furthermore, Canadian Blood Services says that while O-negative donors are always especially needed, donors of all types are encouraged to make a plan to donate this summer.
Those who do not know their blood type will be able to find out after their first donation.
