UVic has placed 17th in a recent ranking of all universities across Canada.

This ‘Global 2000’ ranking is actually a part of a worldwide annual ranking, conducted by the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR).

The 2025 edition is the 14th year of the prestigious Global 2000 list which lists the top 2,000 universities out of 21,462 ranked institutions.

This makes it the largest academic ranking of global universities.

Though UVic placed 17th in Canada, its North American ranking was 130th and its global ranking was 439th—placing it in the top 2.1% of universities in the world.

The Global 2000 list uses four criteria which are weighted accordingly to give a final score to the institutions—education (25%), employability (25%), faculty (10%) and research (40%).

UVic had an overall score of 75.1 out of 100; however, it was not assigned a faculty rank or education rank, which may have impacted its overall performance.

Through the last three years, UVic has placed 17th in Canada, but before that held the 16th best Canadian university ranking since 2014.

The University of Saskatchewan is the institution that pushed UVic back one in the ranking, having climbed the ranks over the past few years.

According to the Global 2000 list, the top 25 Canadian Universities are as follows:

  1. University of Toronto – 23rd globally
  2. McGill University – 27th globally
