Saanich Police are warning the public that a black bear has been sighted roaming in a residential area near to Elk Lake and the Pat Bay Highway.

Specifically, witnesses have reported the bear in the area of Santa Clara Avenue and Piedmont Drive.

According to police, those reporting the bear sighting have seen it rummaging through garbage and moving through residential properties.

At this time, ECOMM has received several calls from concerned residents. Saanich Police say they are actively monitoring the situation and that the BC Conservation Officer Service has been notified.

“While the bear has not displayed aggressive behaviour, its presence in a residential neighbourhood is concerning. Please do not approach the animal,” stated Insp. Damian Kowalewich.

Police say that if you encounter a bear, the best thing to do is stay calm and contact the BC Conservation Officer Service when it is safe to do so, by calling 1-877-952-7277.

According to BC Wildlife, the following should be observed, should you encounter a bear:

  • Do not feed a bear—it’s against the law to feed dangerous wildlife. A fed bear is a dead bear;
  • Remain calm—do not run or climb a tree. It’s best to slowly back away, talking to the bear in a quiet, monotone voice. Do not scream, turn your back on the bear, kneel down or make direct eye contact;
  • Keep away from the bear—do not try to get closer to it. Use pepper spray if the bear gets within 7 metres, or something else to threaten or distract it;
  • Stay together if you are with others—act as a group. Keep children close and carry small children;
  • Go indoors—remember to bring pets indoors if possible;
  • Watch the bear until it leaves—make sure the bear has a clear escape route;
  • Remove anything that may attract a bear—after the bear is gone and it’s safe, search the area and dispose of anything that could cause it to come back.
