Langford funding medical clinic to address critical family doctor shortage

The City of Langford announced today that a new medical clinic has been approved in hopes of connecting more residents with family doctors. 

Though the City believes the onus should be on the BC government to provide adequate access to health care within the province, Langford has had to step up and approve a municipality-run and funded clinic. 

Langford’s city council debated and ultimately approved the merits of this endeavour during last week’s meeting on Tuesday, June 10th. 

According to the City, this clinic will provide space for 10 doctors, who will be able to provide care for approximately 12,500 patients.

This means that nearly 50% of the estimated 27,000 residents without physicians will have new access to a family doctor. 

In order for this initiative to become reality, the City has had to pair up with the South Island Primary Care Society and the Freemasons of Langford. 

Together they navigated a long-term partnership for a commercial space and a renovation in the new Westshore Masonic Centre on Bryn Maur Road. 

Langford will be putting in $1.7 million for the renovation, temporary accommodations for doctors and marketing for the clinic’s doctor recruitment. 

“Langford has always thrived through establishing strong partnerships and today marks another milestone in that legacy. By providing funding for a new doctors clinic, Council is responding to the urgent healthcare needs of our rapidly growing community,” said Mayor Scott Goodmanson, City of Langford. 

“This initiative wouldn’t be possible without the tireless leadership and dedication of the South Island Primary Care Society, and for the partnership with the Freemasons of Langford who will be leasing the space at cost. Together, we’re improving the quality of life for Langford residents.”

Langford’s new clinic is estimated to open in early 2026.
