Esquimalt will once again be hosting the long anticipated return of the annual Buccaneer Days this weekend.
What started in 1939 as a May Queen celebration in Esquimalt, evolved into Esquimalt Days, before eventually becoming Buccaneer Days in 1966.
Every year, the townspeople come out in droves, dressed in naval and pirate attire, all vying for prizes for the best costume.
The most anticipated part of the celebration is always when Esquimalt residents are awakened at a mighty early hour by a loudspeaker mounted atop an Esquimalt Fire engine calling “Wakey, Wakey!”
Buccaneer Days and all its festivities are made possible through over 20 community organizations contributing their time and energy.
This year, the multi-day event will take place from Thursday, May 8th, through until Sunday, May 11th.
