Three people were rushed to hospital Thursday night after a driver going the wrong way down the Trans-Canada Highway triggered a multi-vehicle crash near McKenzie Avenue.
Emergency crews were called to the scene just after 9 p.m. in the southbound lanes of Highway 1 between Helmcken Road and Admirals Road.
According to BC Emergency Health Services (BCEHS), three ambulances responded—two with primary care paramedics and one with advanced care paramedics.
“BC Emergency Health Services received a call at 9:11 p.m. on May 1 regarding a motor vehicle incident on the Trans-Canada Highway of south of Helmcken Road in Saanich,” said Paramedic Public Information Officer Brian Twaites.
Saanich Police say the wrong-way driver struck multiple vehicles, resulting in significant injuries to that driver, who remains in hospital.
BCEHS says two of the patients were taken to hospital in stable condition, while one was in serious but stable condition.
‘Two ambulances with primary care paramedics and one ambulance with advanced care paramedics responded to the scene. Paramedics provided emergency medical treatment to three patients who were transported to hospital, two in stable condition and one in serious but stable condition.”
The crash forced the closure of all southbound lanes of the highway for several hours. A detour was set up via Helmcken Road, while northbound traffic was allowed to pass slowly. The highway fully reopened at around 6:30 a.m. Friday.
The incident remains under investigation.
