There are two beloved parades rolling through Greater Victoria this Saturday

Grab your lawn chair, pack your patience, and get ready for a double dose of parade fun.

This Saturday, Greater Victoria is hosting not one, but two colourful processions—each with its own flair and community spirit. Whether you’re craving pancakes and pirate ships or bagpipes and kilts, there’s something for everyone lining the streets.

And if you happen to live in Esquimalt, don’t be surprised if you’re roused bright and early by a familiar voice booming from a fire truck. That iconic “Wakey Wakey!” shout is back, marking the return of one of the community’s most beloved traditions.

That’s right, two parades are set to take over the region, bringing joy, nostalgia, and a few temporary traffic disruptions.

Esquimalt Buccaneer Days Parade

A longtime local favourite, Buccaneer Days is back in full swing, and it wouldn’t be complete without the community’s spirited Saturday morning parade.

Things kick off bright and early (like really early) with the classic “Wakey Wakey” call, broadcast by loudspeaker from atop an Esquimalt fire engine. If you know, you know.

The Esquimalt Lions pancake breakfast starts flipping at 7:30 a.m. at the curling rink, and the Buccaneer Days Parade hits the road at 10 a.m., starting at Esquimalt and Dominion roads and wrapping up around Admirals Road.

Expect nautical-themed floats, including whales and a buccaneer ship, along with community groups and plenty of small-town charm.

Road closures will be in effect along Esquimalt Road from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and VicPD will be out supporting the event, including use of their RPAS drone system for public safety monitoring.

If you’re planning to watch, arrive early and bring your pirate spirit.

Victoria Tartan Parade

Meanwhile, over in the downtown Victoria core, things will be a little more Highland.

The Victoria Tartan Parade steps off from Centennial Square at 11 a.m., making its way down Government Street and wrapping up near the legislature.

You’ll see pipe bands, Highland dancers, and members of local Scottish groups—all gearing up to promote the 162nd Victoria Highland Games and Celtic Festival, which takes place May 17th and 18th at Topaz Park.

Stick around after the parade for live demonstrations of what you can expect at the festival, including dance, music, and strength competitions.

Traffic disruptions are expected downtown from 10:30 a.m. to noon, so drivers should plan accordingly.

Whether you’re into bagpipes or buccaneers, there’s a parade for you this weekend. Just don’t forget your lawn chair and your best cheering voice.
