A chaotic scene unfolded in Saanich late Monday night after a stolen SUV crashed on Tillicum Road and its two occupants fled the scene on foot.

Just before midnight on April 28th, Saanich Police responded to reports of a single-vehicle collision in the 3000 block of Tillicum. When officers arrived, they found a grey mid-sized SUV that had struck a concrete bike lane divider, immobilizing the vehicle.

No one was inside or near the vehicle.

Witnesses at the scene told police they saw two people run off southbound on Tillicum Road immediately after the crash.

A short time later, officers located and arrested a man and woman matching the description of those seen fleeing. The pair were found near a Dollarama store in the area.

Police say the vehicle had been reported stolen out of Saskatchewan, and the male suspect was also found to be in breach of court-ordered conditions from Shoal Lake, Manitoba.

He was held in custody for a court appearance, while the woman was released.

Some witnesses say the suspects attempted to hide in nearby homes, even offering money in an apparent attempt to evade arrest.

The investigation remains ongoing.
