Residents in the neighbourhood are being urged to remain alert when outdoors. While cougar sightings are rare in urban areas, they can occur, especially in the early morning or evening hours when wildlife is more active.
Last week, Sidney RCMP and Conservation officers were able to subdue a cougar roaming near Sidney Elementary and relocated it to a forested area in Shawnigan Lake.
If you spot the cougar, do not approach. Instead, back away slowly while keeping the animal in sight and call 911 right away.
Cougar safety tips:
- Keep children and pets close and under supervision
- Avoid walking alone, especially during dawn or dusk
- Do not run if you encounter a cougar—this may trigger a chase response
- Make yourself look large, speak firmly, and slowly back away
- Report sightings immediately to police or the BC Conservation Officer Service
