BC Highway Patrol ramps up enforcement across Vancouver Island over long weekend

If you’re hitting the road this Victoria Day long weekend, expect to see a stronger police presence—especially if you’re travelling around Vancouver Island.

BC Highway Patrol says it’s stepping up enforcement from Friday through Monday in an effort to reduce collisions and save lives, with officers cracking down on dangerous driving behaviours like speeding, distracted driving, impaired driving, and failure to wear a seatbelt.

“Victoria Day long weekend is traditionally one of the more dangerous times to be on BC highways,” said Superintendent Mike Coyle. “We’ll be using every tool available, including overtime resources, unmarked vehicles, and joint efforts with local detachments.”

That means drivers can expect to encounter roving patrols, roadside check stops, and even officers using high-powered scopes from overhead vantage points to spot risky drivers from afar.

On Vancouver Island, Highway Patrol units will be active at high-volume traffic zones and ferry terminals to help keep the roads safer for everyone.

Between 2019 and 2023, an average of three people died and nearly 2,200 crashes occurred during this same holiday stretch—numbers that have climbed since a brief drop in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic.

This weekend’s push also ties into BC’s ongoing “High Risk Driving and Motorcycle Awareness” campaign, which runs throughout May.
