RCMP investigating laser pointed at airplane flying over Duncan

North Cowichan RCMP are asking for the public’s help after a laser was pointed at an aircraft earlier this year.

The incident happened on February 11th, as the airplane was departing the Victoria International Airport.

As it flew over the Duncan area, the pilots reported to police that they were targeted with a blue laser for several seconds.

Although uncertain of the exact origin, it was determined that the laser came from an area on the north side of Maple Bay Road.

Pointing a laser at an aircraft is a serious offence under Canadian law.

According to Transport Canada, offenders can face fines up to $100,000, imprisonment for up to five years, or both. They say  such actions pose significant risks to aviation safety by potentially distracting or temporarily blinding pilots during critical phases of flight.

If anyone witnessed anything that could help identify where the laser originated, call North Cowichan RCMP at (250) 749-5522.
