Despite the official arrival of spring just over week away, mother nature seems to have missed the memo.
Victoria is in for some chilly weather, and this weekend, residents might even experience a rare thunderstorm.
According to Environment Canada, Saturday’s forecast calls for rain to taper off by noon, followed by cloudy skies with a 40 percent chance of showers.
The weather agency is warning of an unusual risk of a thunderstorm in the afternoon, which is rare for this time of year.
So, if you’re planning to head outdoors, be sure to keep an eye on the sky — you might just hear a rumble or two.
Thunderstorms occur when warm, moist air rises rapidly into the atmosphere, cooling as it goes. This causes the moisture in the air to condense into clouds, and when the clouds grow large enough, the instability can lead to lightning, thunder, and even heavy rainfall.
Though thunderstorms are more common in the summer, they can still occur during the spring if conditions are right.
After a couple of days of hit-and-miss rain, Victoria can expect some sunshine to make a return starting Sunday. But don’t get too excited about the warmth just yet.
The clear skies will come with a drop in temperatures, as overnight lows are expected to dip to the freezing mark.
Daytime highs will remain in the 10 to 11°C range, but the evenings will be quite brisk.
So, while you can look forward to a stretch of sunshine, don’t forget to bundle up before heading out in the evening — those cool temperatures are here to stay for now.
