Save the date, Victoria.

On Sunday, March 9th, the halls of the Ukrainian Cultural Centre in Victoria will once again ring with the words of Ukraine’s national poet, Taras Shevchenko.

For the city’s Ukrainian community, this annual event is more than just a musical performance—it’s a powerful celebration of cultural heritage that resonates across generations.

“Shevchenko’s work is increasingly important as we face contemporary challenges to Ukrainian identity,” said Pati-Ann Lawe, event coordinator from the Ukrainian Canadian Cultural Society of Vancouver Island.

“This commemoration helps us preserve our cultural foundations in uncertain times.”

Born in 1814, Shevchenko would go on to become a cornerstone of Ukrainian literature, capturing the heart and soul of a nation under the heavy hand of imperial rule.

Today, his words continue to serve as a touchstone for Ukrainian communities worldwide, especially for those who are striving to maintain deep connections to their roots.

According to a media release, the upcoming concert also represents a bridge between the past and present of Ukraine, as well as the uniting of different Ukrainian-Canadian generations in Victoria.

“There’s a learning curve for both established Ukrainian-Canadians and newcomers,” added Lawe.

“Many young Ukrainians are surprised to discover how language and traditions have been preserved here, while we learn from their contemporary Ukrainian experiences.”

The recent influx of newcomers to Victoria has sparked a revitalization of cultural activities, bringing fresh perspectives and energy to the community.

Longtime residents are said to offer support and connection, while newcomers bring new ideas and enthusiasm, making this cultural exchange all the more meaningful.

This year’s concert will showcase both traditional and contemporary pieces, including well-known “Zapovit” and “Topola,” which is a song about lost love during wartime.

University of Victoria’s Serhiy Yekelchyk, a professor of Slavic Studies, will also be at the concert, offering insights into Shevchenko’s lasting influence in a bilingual presentation.

Plus, the event will also feature three choirs—LUNA Ensemble, Kalyna Ukrainian Choir, and the Vinok Children’s Choir. Each represents different generations dedicated to preserving Ukrainian musical traditions.

Admission is just $10, and children and students are free.
