Lovers of nature and photography, this is a must-see!
The Royal BC Museum is once again rolling out the red carpet for one of the world’s most celebrated photography exhibitions: Wildlife Photographer of the Year.
The exhibit kicked off on February 14th and runs until April 27th, showcasing over 100 breathtaking new images—each one a testament to the awe-inspiring beauty of the natural world.
Highlighted amongst the collection includes “The Swarm of Life” by Vancouver Island’s own Shane Gross, this year’s Adult Grand Title Winner.
The photograph, captured beneath the surface of a Vancouver Island lake, features a swirling mass of western toad tadpoles swimming among lily pads.

Shane’s image was selected from an astonishing 59,228 entries from photographers across 117 countries and territories.
“We are thrilled to exhibit the 60th Wildlife Photographer of the Year and showcase the incredible beauty of the place we call home,” said Tracey Drake, CEO of the Royal BC Museum.
“Sixty years of celebrating the world’s best nature and wildlife photographers is an incredible achievement and to have a local Vancouver Island photographer be the Adult Grand Title Winner makes this year extra special.”
Gross expressed his excitement as well, saying that he looks forward to attending the exhibition every year.
“To be going back this year, in its 60th year, as the Adult Grand Title Winner, with a picture taken on Vancouver Island is surreal…to put it mildly,” said Gross.
“I can’t wait to meet other nature lovers at the museum in such a wonderful setting, surrounded by images that inspire. I hope folks walk out the museum fired up to love and protect our stunning planet and all the wonderful biodiversity she supports.”

For those that have never visited the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition before, it features work from both professional and amateur photographers, and covers a wide range of topics.
Themes can range from animal behaviour, climate change, conservation and pollution—making this event a fully rounded garden of inspiration and thoughtful reflection on our planet.
