A tragic crash on Mayne Island claimed the life of a local resident last Sunday.
At approximately 10:53 a.m., on March 9th, Outer Gulf Islands RCMP received a report of a partially submerged vehicle in Miners Bay. Emergency crews from RCMP, Mayne Island Fire Rescue, and BC Ambulance responded to the scene.
Upon arrival, first responders located a vehicle upside down in the tidal zone near the Miners Bay public wharf.
The driver and lone occupant of the vehicle was found deceased inside.
According to police, the preliminary investigation determined the vehicle had been travelling westbound on Fernhill Road when it struck a concrete barrier at the intersection of Georgina Point Road.
It then collided with the north railing of the nearby pier and went over the cliff, coming to rest in the low tide zone below.
Police say speed is believed to have been a contributing factor.
“This is a tragic incident which ended the life of a local Mayne Island resident,” said acting Detachment Commander Cst. Marcel Taekema. “Our condolences go out to the family and friends of this individual.”
The Outer Gulf Islands RCMP are asking anyone with information related to this incident to contact the detachment at 250-629-6171.
The crash remains under investigation by the RCMP and the BC Coroners Service.
