Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for parts of Vancouver Island as a system brings heavy rainfall and rising freezing levels to the region over the next 24 hours.
While much of Vancouver Island saw steady rainfall on Sunday, the southern sections of the west coast—particularly around Port Renfrew—are expected to see the most extreme weather.
The national weather agency warns that between 100 to 150 mm of rain could fall by the end of Monday, with the heaviest precipitation occurring Sunday afternoon and overnight.
The statement notes that Port Renfrew is forecast to receive the brunt of the storm, with rainfall totals approaching 150 mm, while areas like Tofino are likely to see closer to 100 mm.
Alongside the rain, freezing levels are expected to rise significantly and remain elevated through the first half of the week, which could contribute to further runoff and increased water levels in local rivers and streams.
Environment Canada cautions that localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible, and drivers should be extra vigilant on the roads—particularly if visibility becomes reduced.
Motorists are reminded to slow down, watch for tail lights ahead, and be prepared to stop if needed. Rainfall warnings are issued when significant rainfall is expected and may lead to serious impacts.
