Big changes are being planned for the former Hudson’s Bay space and more details have been revealed.
The former department store will be transformed into a multi-use destination featuring shopping, dining, entertainment and community experiences.
The former Hudson’s Bay location at Mayfair Shopping Centre is set to become much more than another traditional retail space.
Central Walk, the owner of Mayfair Shopping Centre, has announced plans to transform the large former department store into a multi-dimensional destination combining retail, dining, entertainment, culture and community experiences.
The company says the redevelopment will create new reasons for people to visit the shopping centre, gather with friends and family, and spend more time at the property.
Rather than filling the entire space with one major retailer, the vision appears to involve several different businesses, attractions and experiences operating within the former Hudson’s Bay location.
Central Walk formally unveiled its plans for both Mayfair and Woodgrove Centre in Nanaimo during a press conference on Thursday, September 10th.
The event includes presentations related to H Mart, a new Family Entertainment Centre project and TM Wander, an experiential destination concept that blends food, retail, entertainment and cultural programming.
H Mart already operates a location inside Mayfair Shopping Centre. However, Central Walk has not yet confirmed what role the company may play in the redevelopment of the former Hudson’s Bay space.
It also remains unclear whether every concept being presented Thursday will be introduced at both Vancouver Island shopping centres or divided between the Mayfair and Woodgrove properties.
TM Wander’s first location opened at Tsawwassen Mills earlier this year.
The 24,000-square-foot concept is inspired by Asian night markets and brings together food vendors, small retailers, family attractions, live entertainment and cultural installations.
Central Walk says its broader goal is to move beyond the traditional shopping-centre model by bringing commerce, entertainment and community experiences together under one roof.
The redevelopment represents a significant new chapter for Mayfair following the closure of Hudson’s Bay, which left one of the shopping centre’s largest spaces vacant.
Specific businesses, project timelines and opening dates have not yet been announced. Central Walk says additional details about the redevelopment and participating brands will be released as the project moves forward.
