WestJet members, this is for you!

It’s no secret that the flight industry took a hit during the COVID pandemic, and that they’ve had to make some major changes and adjustments in order to recover.

As new routes are added and flight numbers are picking up, adjustments are again being made to meet capacity needs and to increase affordability.

In a recent media release, WestJet has announced some significant changes to their loyalty program that will reflect and aim to meet such customer needs. It’s said to be their biggest update in 15 years.

Beginning on April 30th, the airline will introduce a series of updates that are designed to make earning, redeeming and achieving status easier and more rewarding than before.

Updated points system

The first of changes will be the introduction of WestJet Points, which will replace the familiar WestJet dollars. One WestJet dollar will now equal 100 WestJet points.

These points don’t expire, giving flyers greater flexibility and peace of mind as points are accumulated. As soon as April 30th rolls around, the new points will be accessible to members.

Redeem points on flights and everyday purchases with new partnerships that expand beyond air travel.

In addition to earning points on base fares, they can now also be earned on things like seat selection, checked bags and upgrades. The only exceptions are government taxes and fees.

For Teal members, the earn rate on flights will be double. Plus, when members redeem, they can use points for the full fare, which includes taxes and extras.

If you’re not able to fly often, you can still reach any level of tier status (including Platinum) by spending with the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard.

“We are improving WestJet Rewards to bring more value to all Canadians, whether that’s our frequent flyers, credit card holders or the casual traveler,” said Steve McClelland, Vice-President of Loyalty, WestJet.

“That’s why we’ve introduced changes to our program across both flights and everyday partnerships, that give members so many great ways to earn points and save for flights, vacations or enhanced travel experiences.”

Partnerships with everyday businesses

WestJet is launching a rewards eStore, making it possible to earn points while you shop online. Retailers such as Amazon, Apple, Sephora and Sport Chek are on the list of partners.

And if you’re looking to redeem points in other ways besides flights, the eStore also allows you to use your points on merchandise and gift cards.

Other partnerships include the ability to link WestJet Rewards with other accounts such as TELUS Rewards and Skip the Dishes.

Redeem points for TELUS services or have your meal delivery count towards your next adventure!

In-flight benefits

WestJet Rewards members will enjoy exclusive access to fast and free Wi-Fi on flights, provided by TELUS.

Whether you’re streaming, shopping, working, or playing, this upgrade will transform your in-flight experience.

More details on this feature will be revealed soon.

The aim for these new rewards is to enhance the value, flexibility, and simplicity for their customers.
