A cougar sighting near a popular recreation area in Saanich has prompted a warning from police, urging residents to stay vigilant while enjoying the trails around Elk/Beaver Lake.
Saanich Police responded to a report of a cougar near the Brookleigh boat launch at the north end of Elk Lake around 1:20 p.m. on Friday, February 28th.
Officers arrived within minutes and conducted a thorough search of the area, but the animal was not spotted again.
The BC Conservation Officer Service was also notified and attended the scene, however, the cougar’s whereabouts remain unknown.
Authorities have not determined which direction it may have travelled.
With sightings on the rise during this time of year, police are advising residents to exercise caution, particularly those walking in the northern section of the lake or taking their dogs for a stroll.
Cougars are typically elusive and avoid human interaction, but encounters can happen.
Wildlife experts recommend staying in groups, keeping pets on a leash, and making noise while walking in wooded areas. If confronted by a cougar, it’s advised to remain calm, make yourself appear larger, and never turn your back or run.
Anyone who spots a cougar in the area is encouraged to report it to the BC Conservation Officer Service at 1-877-952-7277.
