A Colwood elementary school music teacher has been charged with “accessing child pornography” and immediately suspended from all duties.
Sooke School District (SD62) announced via a media release that on February 5th, the school board became aware of charges being laid against faculty member Giles Borland.
Borland has reportedly been employed by SD62 since 2016 with his most recent role being a music teacher at David Cameron Elementary in Colwood. Prior to that, Borland was teaching at Wishart Elementary, also in Colwood.
“Due to unrelated circumstances, Mr. Borland has not been in a classroom during the 2024-2025 school year,” said SD62 in a media release.
“The school district took immediate action upon becoming aware of the charge. Given the severity of the charge, Superintendent Paul Block exercised his authority under the School Act to suspend Mr. Borland.”
The school board also noted that he will not be allowed to teach anywhere while this matter is under review.
Now that charges have been laid and the matter is before the courts, SD62 says they want to be as transparent as possible while remaining within the legal parameters they must abide by.
“What we know at this time is part of the public record,” said SD62.
“Although current information is limited, we are committed to keeping our community informed to the fullest extent possible.”
The district is making a range of support resources available for both students and their families.
For those needing support, SD62 is strongly urging families to connect with their child’s teacher, school counsellor, principal or vice principal.
