The Alberni Valley Rescue Squad (AVRS) was called into action after a snowshoer was injured on Mount 5040.
According to AVRS’s social media post, on January 18th, an individual had slid over 300 feet down a steep slope before coming to a stop against a tree, sustaining a serious lower limb injury.
Luckily, the snowshoer was carrying a communication device and was able to call for help, leading to a quick rescue effort from response teams—including a hoist team and helicopters.
Given the icy conditions, rescuers exited the helicopter by hover, using crampons and ice axes to safely navigate the challenging terrain.
While waiting for the rescue teams to arrive, two bystanders stepped in to assist by keeping the injured snowshoer warm and stabilizing her injuries.
Ground crews were also on standby as a backup in case aerial access was not feasible.
Fortunately, the snowshoer’s location allowed the hoist team to successfully lift her out of the area and transport her to meet emergency service crews, who were waiting nearby.
AVRS said the rescue was a team effort that showcased the incredible dedication of all emergency response members.
“Every role is essential to a successful outcome,” the post reads.
To ensure the safety of those out in snowy conditions, AVRS provided the following takeaways:
- Snow conditions are unpredictable: Always be aware that snow conditions can change rapidly, affecting both the terrain and your ability to move safely
- Know the terrain: Keep a close eye on the slopes and hazards around you
- Be prepared for emergencies: Always bring proper equipment, communication tools and first aid supplies
- Weather can change quickly: Weather conditions can shift dramatically, come prepared
Stay safe on your next adventure!
