In the City of Victoria’s 10th annual top dog breed map, Labradors and lab crosses still reign supreme.
This Endeavour was started in an effort to promote and encourage Victorians to license their dog through the City.
This way, if the animal escapes and is captured by Animal Control, it can be returned to its owner with much less hassle.
According to the City, Labradors and lab crosses have been the top dogs of Victoria in all 10 years they have been doing the dog breed map.
The map shows all neighbourhoods of the city and illustrates what the most popular dogs are in those areas.

As the image shows, Labradors are most popular in 11 of Victoria’s 12 neighbourhoods, including in downtown, where pugs used to be king.
The only area Labradors did not win was in North Park where Chihuahua crosses are the outlier.
The City says that Fairfield is also a notable neighbourhood for having the most licensed dogs with 944 pups registered with Victoria.
Just behind Fairfield, dogs are very much in vogue in James Bay and Vic West, with 811 and 808 registered dogs respectively.
In the last 10 years, while Victoria’s population has grown by about 12,000 people, the number of licensed dogs has declined from 6,500 to 6,444.
Dog licence renewals can be done through the City of Victoria’s website, or at a licensed dog license vendor.
The City says that a license is required for all dogs over 4-months-old and the first one must be bought in person.
“Hundreds of dogs are quickly reunited with their owners in Victoria each year because they are found wearing a current dog tag,” said the City in a statement.
“Those who renew their licence before the end of February will save $20 and will be entered to win the first dog tag (#0001) of the year and bragging rights of owning the City of Victoria’s Number One Dog.”
Funding generated by dog licences help fund the animal control, pound service and providing dog waste bags in parks.
