Former Victoria Royals goaltender Tyler Palmer added an exciting milestone to his hockey career, signing an amateur tryout deal with the Edmonton Oilers yesterday.
Palmer served as the emergency backup Monday night during the Oilers’ 4-2 win over the Seattle Kraken.
Palmer’s call-up came after starting goaltender Stuart Skinner stepped away to celebrate the birth of his baby boy with his wife, Chloe.
While Palmer didn’t see any game action, he had the unique opportunity to suit up as the backup for Calvin Pickard in an NHL game—an unforgettable moment for the lifelong Oilers fan.

Currently, Palmer is playing his first season with the University of Alberta Golden Bears in the Canadian USports league. He has been putting up strong numbers, with an 11-4-0 record, a 2.21 goals-against average, and a .921 save percentage.
Palmer spent a season and a half with the Victoria Royals, joining the team in 2021. During his time in Victoria, he appeared in 61 games before being traded to the Everett Silvertips midway through the 2022-23 season.
While his time with the Royals was brief, his best junior season came in 2023-24 with Everett, where he recorded an impressive 30-9-2 record in 46 games and was one of only two WHL goaltenders to reach 30 wins that season.
He also earned the US Division Humanitarian of the Year award that year for his contributions off the ice.
The #Oilers have signed goaltender Tyler Palmer to an amateur tryout & the @GBHKY netminder will back up Calvin Pickard tonight vs. Seattle.

Though his NHL game action debut will have to wait, signing with the Oilers was a dream come true for Palmer, who grew up idolizing the team.
