A popular waterfront restaurant in Sidney has abruptly closed, leaving some diners to rethink their New Year’s Eve plans.
After 12 years of service, the Sea Glass Waterfront Grill in Sidney has announced its permanent closure.
Sadly, due to financial pressures, the Harbour Road eatery located at Van Isle Marina is now closed.
“It’s with heavy hearts that we have decided to permanently close Sea Glass as of today,” announced the restaurant via social media on Saturday, December 28th.
“Unfortunately, the cost of doing business has increased three-fold, if not more since we took it over in September 2022 and although we could put our prices up, we don’t feel right charging what we would have to even break even.”
Sea Glass noted that they are not alone in the struggle of keeping a restaurant alive in these trying economic times.
“Sea Glass is not alone—all restaurants are struggling and it won’t be long before a burger and fries will be over $30,” they said.
The restaurant was opened in 2012 by Chef Ron Vincent and his wife Maureen. The couple then passed the business along to their son in 2022, Zach Vincent, to allow Ron to retire.
In addition to the financial pressures, the abruptness of this closure was brought on by the separation of Zach and his partner of over 10 years.
Sea Glass’ announcement was greeted by many with sorrow.
“Very sad. With the loss of Blues Bayou and Zanzibar, the eating scene is changing there, and not for the good,” reads a comment on their social media post.
Another commenter said, “So sorry. This is a huge loss for the community. You will be missed.”
Many comments also had to do with questions about unused gift cards, to which Sea Glass said they are working out how to navigate the matter.
