Many commuters were detoured Saturday morning as the Bay Street Bridge in Victoria was shut down for several hours following a single-vehicle crash that sent two people to hospital with serious injuries.
Victoria Police said the incident occurred shortly after 4 a.m., when a grey sedan veered onto the south pedestrian walkway near the intersection of Bay Street and Pleasant Road.
In a statement posted to social media around 6:30 a.m., VicPD announced the bridge closure to allow officers to conduct their investigation.
Throughout the morning, police were seen placing markers on the roadway near the heavily damaged vehicle.
Both occupants of the car were transported to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
While the cause of the crash remains under investigation, VicPD spokesperson Cheryl Major confirmed that details are not yet available for release.
The bridge was reopened to traffic around 11:45 a.m.Saturday.
