Stargazers on Vancouver Island could be in for a celestial treat this Friday night, as the Geminids meteor shower – one of the largest of the year – is set to dazzle the night sky.
According to the Old Farmers’ Almanac, the Geminids deliver a spectacular show with approximately 75 meteors per hour visible streaking across the heavens.
Under ideal conditions, the peak of the shower could feature up to 120 meteors per hour, making it a must-see event for astronomy enthusiasts.
“This shower is unique because the meteors are visible all night long since the constellation Gemini arises just an hour or two after nightfall. Most meteor showers require waiting until midnight or predawn for the best viewing,” noted the Almanac.
However, in Victoria, the forecast may dampen stargazing plans. Clouds and periods of rain are predicted, which could obscure the meteors. Those eager to catch a glimpse of the dazzling display may need to venture to areas with clearer skies.
Adding to the excitement, Jupiter will also be visible, shining brightly as it reaches its closest approach to Earth.
The Geminids will remain visible until December 21st, offering multiple chances to enjoy the show if weather conditions cooperate.
For those who miss out, the next meteor shower – the Ursids – will peak on December 22nd.
