This Wednesday, the North Cowichan municipal council will discuss the sale of the vacant, former RCMP detachment to the Cowichan Tribes for $1.2 million.
The 2.9-acre parcel of land, which used to be utilized by local police, is located at 6060 Canada Avenue and has not been used since the RCMP moved to their new detachment on Fort Road.
Cowichan Tribes now want to purchase the building constructed in 1980, and the land it occupies from the Municipality to use for administrative work, public works and emergency services.
Municipal staff presented an offer to council from the Cowichan Tribes back in July, then followed through in October, agreeing to the $1.2 million amount with some stipulations.
The transfer of land will include certain protections for nearby Bings Creek from future development, while permitting North Cowichan to conduct restoration and maintenance work.
However, North Cowichan intends to keep the front 2.6 meters of the land to support the Canada Avenue active transportation project planned for 2025 and 2026.
Additionally, North Cowichan will be responsible for paying the $10,500 realtor commission, resulting in a municipal revenue of $1,189,500, which will be placed in the Land Sales Reserve.
Final conditions for the land transfer were agreed upon by council during the November 20th meeting.
Municipal staff recommends that council accept all the terms of this sale on Wednesday, December 18th, completing the land transfer.
