After more than a month of halted mail services, Canada Post employees are set to return to work on Tuesday, marking the end of a strike that began on November 15th.
However, the core issues that led to the job action remain unresolved as the federal government intervenes to push the bargaining process forward.
Canada’s Labour Minister, Steven MacKinnon, directed the Canada Industrial Relations Board last week to determine whether a deal could be reached before the end of the year.
After two days of hearings over the weekend, the board declared an impasse, ordering the 55,000 striking workers back to their positions under existing contracts. These contracts, now extended until May, allow negotiations to continue while ensuring mail delivery resumes.

In an announcement Sunday night, Canada Post confirmed that mail operations will resume Tuesday and noted a temporary agreement with the union to implement a five per cent wage increase retroactive to the day after the previous contracts expired.
The return-to-work order comes after weeks of failed negotiations.
MacKinnon described talks as having “gone in the wrong direction” in the weeks following the strike’s start.
The Labour Minister’s intervention reflects mounting pressure from business groups, who had called on the government to act quickly amid significant disruptions during the holiday shopping season.
Many businesses and individuals were forced to seek alternative delivery solutions to manage shipments.
Despite these developments, union representatives have emphasized that critical structural issues, such as working conditions and workload concerns, remain unaddressed. These issues are expected to feature prominently in the next phase of negotiations.
The prolonged work stoppage has sparked debate about the timing of the government’s intervention. While the decision to resume operations will undoubtedly bring relief to Canadians and businesses, questions linger about whether the order to return to work came too late to mitigate the damage caused by the strike.
For now, Canadians can expect mail and package deliveries to resume as Canada Post transitions out of the disruption, but the road to a long-term resolution may still be far from over.
