Tanya Bub, one of Victoria’s most prolific driftwood artists has a new exhibit opening, and this time she’s been playing with new mediums for her work.
Her exhibit is called BIRDS! and it will be on display in the Gage Gallery beginning next week.
For this art show, Bub has been not only utilizing driftwood to create her pieces, but she has also been using paper and wire, or blending these styles.
BIRDS! will feature over 100 bird sculptures for people to see, enjoy and even buy if they so choose.
“I wanted to do something that people would like, and people just really love birds,” Bub told Victoria Buzz.
“I wanted to have a strong single theme, so that it would feel like I could sort of experiment within the boundaries of that theme.”
She says the wire, paper and driftwood mediums are all pretty equally represented at her new exhibit—some being serious, some being goofy and some being kind of quirky.
“But they all look like they’re mine, they all look alive which is what I go for,” said Bub. “I wanted to do something light and fun, because it is sort of a dark time of year.”
There are a few highlight pieces within this exhibit which are special to Bub and she thinks will resonate with those who come in to see her exhibit.
The exhibit features a driftwood eagle which has a wingspan of around seven feet, There is a large blue heron that is also made of driftwood, there are a couple owls made of paper and wire and Bub says she made an amusing flock of quail out of chicken wire that will be displayed outside the gallery.
Along with many of the pieces, Bub says she will also be adorning the walls of the gallery with fun facts and tidbits of knowledge about the birds being displayed.

Bub’s body of work is celebrated not only locally, but on an international scale. She just came back from a massive exhibit in Qatar that featured upcycled art from around the world.
Locally, she has raised tens of thousands of dollars for local charities and non-profits like Wild ARC, Our Place Society and organizations supporting Ukrainian refugees on Vancouver Island.
In addition to being a creator, Bub helps run the Gage Gallery along with 21 other artists and makers.
Every three weeks the gallery features a new exhibit by one of the 22 artists that make up this collective.
Bub’s BIRDS! show will be on from December 3rd to 22nd at the Gage Gallery, located in Bastion Square, and is free to one and all.
For those looking for a last minute, unique Christmas gift, all of Bub’s pieces in this exhibit will be for sale from between $30 to $3,000.
The Gage Gallery runs entirely on art sold through the space, so all proceeds of art sales goes towards keeping this gallery open and supporting the artists in the collective.
