Now that the dust has settled on BC’s recent election, with only a few last steps to take in terms of judicial recounts, Premier David Eby is getting ready to swear in his new cabinet.
Judicial recounts have been ordered for a handful of electoral districts in which the razor thin margin between BC Conservative and BC NDP were below a set threshold. These recounts are conducted by the Supreme Court of British Columbia and should be completed by November 7th and 8th.
Before Eby’s government can begin working on keeping the promises made on the campaign trail, the re-elected Premier needs to select his cabinet and have them sworn in.
This swearing in has now been slated to take place on Monday, November 18th at the Government House in Victoria.
“Judicial recounts will ensure every vote is counted,” Premier Eby said.
“Following those counts, British Columbians want to see urgent action taken on their priorities, including affordability and housing, strengthening health care and building strong communities within a vibrant economy. The first step is swearing in a new cabinet for British Columbia.”
Until a new cabinet is chosen and sworn in, a transition team has been advising the Premier on the formations of ministries and who would be best suited for the cabinet.
This transition team is co-chaired by Doug White, the Premier’s special counsel on Indigenous reconciliation and Shannon Salter, the Premier’s deputy minister and head of the public service.
In the coming week, Eby will present his recommendations for cabinet to BC Lieutenant Governor, Janet Austin.
This process thereby establishes the new government.
Prior to the swearing in of cabinet members, on November 13th, the newly elected BC NDP MLAs will be sworn in and formally take their seats in the legislature with the Opposition caucus and BC Green Party MLAs being sworn in the day before, on November 12th.
