A Duncan-area resident has been hit with a $6,000 administrative penalty after allegedly violating BC’s open burning smoke control regulation.
Peter Morris was fined on October 23rd, for three separate infractions, according to an environmental compliance report published on the provincial government’s website.
The violations include burning land-clearing debris within 100 metres of nearby residences, failing to notify neighbours within 500 metres prior to the burn, and not completing the burn by 4 p.m. on the same day it began. These actions are required under the Open Burning Smoke Control Regulation to reduce smoke impacts on surrounding communities.
The BC Conservation Officer Service (BCCOS) posted a photo of the incident on X, showing the scene when officers arrived. The image highlights the scale of the fire and its proximity to residential areas.
The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy issued the fine under the Environmental Management Act for “failure to comply with the Act, regulations, terms of permit, or orders issued under this Act,” the report states.
