BC Ferries says that due to high winds in the North Strait of Georgia and North Vancouver Island, several sailings have been cancelled with a potential for additional cancellations.

At around 4:30 a.m. on Monday, November 4th, Environment Canada posted a wind warning advisory for the region of Greater Victoria, northern Vancouver Island and the Central Coast regions.

In Victoria, westward winds will be present until early evening with gusts between 70 and 90 km/h, according to Environment Canada,

On northern Vancouver Island, winds will be gusting between 90 and 110 km/h.

“A potent storm is bringing moderate to strong southeast winds to the Greater Victoria region this morning,” says Environment Canada in their wind warning advisory.

“These winds will shift to very strong westerlies later this morning. Winds will gradually ease tonight as the system moves to the east and weakens.”

The national weather authority added that high winds could toss loose objects or cause tree branches to break and power outages are a possibility.

As of this publication, there are 51 power outages on Vancouver Island, impacting around 33,500 BC Hydro customers.

Be sure to check BC Ferries current conditions page prior to sailing during the current wind advisory.

“The safety of our passengers and crew is of primary importance to us, and we will continue to monitor this weather system and share information as it becomes available,” said BC Ferries.
