Attention all history buffs and movie lovers, this is for you!
The Sidney Museum and Archives is hosting a series of movie screenings that explore the topics they have featured in their exhibits.
Their first movie night at the museum will take place on Tuesday, October 22nd and will reflect their current exhibit, Lost Liberties: The War Measures Act and Displacing Differences.
This exhibit explores the suspension of civil liberties in Canada during the First World War, the Second World War, and the 1970 October Crisis, Lost Liberties.
In support of this exhibit’s themes, they’ll show two films related to the forced displacement of Japanese Canadians from BC’s coast during World War II, including “Minoru: Memory of Exile” and “Sleeping Tigers: The Asahi Baseball Story.”
Friday, November 8th will bring a screening of “Island of Shadows: D’Arcy Island Leper Colony, 1891-1924,” which showcases Canadians, primarily of Chinese descent, afflicted with leprosy and being forced to live on D’Arcy Island.
For this film, director/producer Erik Paulsson will be joining attendees for a virtual Q&A!
In the Displacing Differences display at the museum, they explored the history of the penitentiary on Piers Island which in the 1930s was the site of incarceration of several hundred Sons of Freedom Doukhobors.
So, to reflect this, Thursday, November 21st will feature the movie “My Doukhobor Cousins”—a documentary that looks at one family’s history who were affected by related harsh government policies.
All of the featured screenings will be held in-person at the Sidney Museum at 7 p.m. Admission is by donation!
