A former cashier at a Vancouver Island grocery store is facing serious allegations of stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars from their employer.
Jim Pattison Ltd. has filed a lawsuit against a former cashier at one of its Vancouver Island grocery stores, alleging that she stole over $216,000 over a three-year period.
The civil claim, filed on September 17th in BC Supreme Court, accuses Linda Elizabeth Nissen, a former head cashier at Quality Foods in Courtenay, of misappropriating $216,392.93 between 2019 and 2022.
According to the lawsuit, Nissen allegedly “fraudulently misappropriated” the funds and subsequently “intentionally and fraudulently altered” the company’s accounting and banking records to disguise the theft.
Jim Pattison Ltd. claims that the alleged theft came to light during a review of financial records, prompting an investigation that led to Nissen’s termination in 2022.
The civil claim further alleges that Nissen used company money to purchase personal assets, such as real estate, though details of these purchases are currently unknown.
The company is seeking an accounting and tracing remedy to track the assets purchased with the allegedly misappropriated funds.
In addition to the amount allegedly stolen, Jim Pattison Ltd. claims to have incurred additional expenses related to investigating the alleged theft and fraud. The lawsuit seeks compensation for the full amount allegedly stolen, along with costs associated with the investigation.
Nissen has not yet responded to the allegations, and none of the claims have been proven in court.
Jim Pattison Ltd. is a subsidiary of the Jim Pattison Group, a diversified conglomerate based in British Columbia with interests in numerous industries, including grocery retail. Quality Foods, where Nissen worked, is a well-known grocery chain on Vancouver Island and is owned by the Jim Pattison Group.
