Cyclist suffers minor injuries after vehicle failed to yield in Oak Bay

A collision between a cyclist and a motor vehicle at the intersection of Beach Drive and Ripon Road in Oak Bay is believed to have been caused by a driver failing to yield.

The incident occurred at approximately 6:02 p.m. when a 42-year-old female driver, who had stopped at a stop sign on Ripon Road, proceeded without yielding to the cyclist riding on Beach Drive, who had the right of way.

According to the Oak Bay Police Department, the impact caused the cyclist to fall from their bike, resulting in minor injuries.

The cyclist was treated on-site by paramedics for cuts and discomfort in their hand.

Fortunately, their injuries were not more severe, thanks in part to their decision to wear a helmet at the time of the incident. However, the bicycle sustained significant damage, with a deformed wheel, a deflated tire, and a cracked helmet illustrating the seriousness of the collision.

The driver was issued a violation ticket for failing to yield after stopping, incurring a fine of $167. Deputy Chief Kris Rice emphasized the need for all road users to adhere to traffic rules to ensure everyone’s safety. “This incident highlights the importance of vigilance at intersections,” he said. “We are grateful that the cyclist’s injuries were not more severe, attributed to them wearing a helmet.”

In a separate incident on September 26th, Oak Bay Police conducted a traffic enforcement operation using an Automated Licence Plate Reader which flagged a vehicle with inactive insurance.

The 25-year-old driver, a novice driver, was issued multiple violation tickets and had his vehicle towed from the scene.
